Welcome West Sacramento’s New Police Chief, Thomas McDonald

Police BadgeThe City of West Sacramento has welcomed its new Chief of Police, Thomas McDonald. He is the City’s fifth Chief of Police, following the retirement of Dan Drummond. The July 9 swearing-in ceremony was held at City Hall.

Born in Texas, Chief Thomas McDonald is the son of a career US Air Force officer. His family moved often and he spent a good part of his youth in Europe. Tom moved to Southern California in the early 70’s. He began his career in law enforcement in 1983 with the Los Angeles Police Department. As a Police Officer he worked numerous patrol and specialized assignments including gang enforcement; a training officer, was an element member in Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT), a tactics instructor in the police academy, and a staff researcher.  In 1995 Tom was promoted to Sergeant and worked a variety of assignments including patrol operations, various special units, and as a Training Coordinator for two divisions. Tom also served as the Officer-in-Charge of the LAPD’s Community Policing Unit. In response to the North Hollywood Bank Robbery, Tom conceptualized, researched and developed the Law Enforcement Tactical Applications Course, which is an advanced tactical training course designed for in-service officers.

In 1999, Tom was promoted to Lieutenant. During the 2000 Democratic National Convention, he distinguished himself as an expert in crowd management. For his next assignment he was selected to serve as the Adjutant to the Chief of Staff. Following the September 11th attack on the World Trade Center in New York City, Tom conceptualized, developed and led Operation “Archangel”, an anti-terrorism initiative designed to protect critical infrastructure and key resources. Operation “Archangel” worked collaboratively with the US Department of Homeland Security.

In 2006, Tom promoted to Captain and served as the commanding officer of Operation Archangel, and as patrol commanding officer in Both Rampart and Southeast Areas. In 2010, Tom promoted to the rank of Captain III, Commanding Officer of Emergency Operations Division. In October of 2012, Tom was then assigned as the Commanding Officer, Emergency Services Division, which includes the Bomb Squad, Hazmat, and Bomb K-9 units.

On July 8, 2013 Tom McDonald was named as the 5th Chief of Police of the West Sacramento Police Department. Chief McDonald has a degree in Organizational Management from Biola University. He has two children; his son, Jordan, lives in Portland, Oregon and his daughter, Kylie, lives in Newport Beach, California. Kylie McDonald had the honor of pinning Chief McDonald’s badge at the Swearing-In Ceremony.
