West Sacramento Fire Dept. crews have been participating in annual firefighter survival training during February. The training challenges firefighters to practice emergency calls for help, deploy rescue teams, and perform self-rescue techniques. For some exercises, firefighters are blindfolded and wear approximately 85 pounds of protective equipment while trying to navigate small tunnels with electrical wires blocking their paths. Such a drill simulates being trapped in a roof collapse while trying to maneuver through media cable, and electrical and communication lines. The training prepares firefighters to respond effectively when battling dangerous conditions.
