John Heilmann, Deputy Fire Chief of the Operations Division at UC Davis and the City of Davis Fire Departments has been appointed as the City of West Sacramento’s next fire chief.
Heilmann formerly served in the West Sacramento Fire Department as Fire Division Chief of the Training Division, and also as Captain, Engineer and Firefighter.
“John is a West Sacramento success story,” said West Sacramento City Manager Martin Tuttle. “He spent 15 years with the city fire department, became a leader at UC Davis, and we’re delighted to welcome him as our new fire chief.” Heilmann was instrumental in the origination of the West Valley Regional Fire Training Consortium, which coordinates training among UC Davis, City of Davis, Woodland, and West Sacramento fire departments.
“I’m excited for the opportunity,” said Heilmann. “I look forward to returning to West Sacramento and building on the great work of Fire Chief Rick Martinez.”
Heilmann grew up in the Bay Area, and graduated from Sonoma State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology. He also attended San Jose State University where he participated in intercollegiate athletics. After graduation, Heilmann joined the Marinwood Community Service District as a Cadet Firefighter. He started his career in West Sacramento as a Firefighter in 1998. Heilmann starts his new post on April, 17, 2015.
