Abandoned Barge Demolition Under Way at Port of West Sacramento

Several barges are being hauled out of Lake Washington this week as part of a clean-up effort at the Port of West Sacramento. The barges, in various states of disrepair, have been illegally anchored in Lake Washington for several years.

Crews using excavators started breaking down the barges Monday. They also removed a wide assortment of items from the vessels including scrap metal, motors and even a pair of airplane wings.

The project is being financed through an Abandoned Watercraft Abatement Fund grant awarded to the City of West Sacramento by the California Department of Boating and Waterways.
