ON-GOING PROGRAMS:

 BILINGUAL RUSSIAN STORY – Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. -7 :30 p.m. Children ages 0 to 5 years and their parents or caregivers are invited to join us for stories, songs, movement, rhymes and finger-plays in Russian and English. Arts and crafts will also be provided as part of this story time.

 BILINGUAL SPANISH STORY – Saturdays at 11 a.m. -12 p.m. Children ages 0 to 5 years and their parents or caregivers are invited to join us for stories, songs, movement, rhymes and finger-plays in Spanish and English. Arts and crafts will also be provided as part of this story time.

 BUDDY READING – Mondays at 4:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. Practice reading with an older “buddy”. Each child will be paired up with a high school student from the River City High School Interact Club for a 30-minute reading session.  This helps builds confidence in reading out loud and comprehension in reading.  After 10 visits, a participant can pick 1 free book. Registration Required.

ENGLISH CONVERSATION GROUPS – Wednesday at 4 p.m. -5 p.m. and Fridays at 10 a.m. -11 a.m. Join our adult Conversation Group and improve your English in a fun and relaxed way with the aid of a group facilitator. No registration is required; drop-in visitors are welcome.

HOMEWORK CENTER – Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3 p.m. -5 p.m. FREE after school program for students in grades 3 through 8 to receive homework help. Pre-Registration is required.  Registration application is free and available at the Information/Reference Desk at the Arthur F. Turner Community Library.  If there is any question, please call (916) 375-6469 to speak with the Homework Center Assistant.

HUG-a-BYE BABY – Thursdays at 11 am-12 pm Children ages 0 to 12 months and their parents or caregivers are invited to this lap-sit program that features language development through songs, picture books, finger-plays and lullabies.

MOTHER GOOSE – Tuesdays at 11 am-12 pm An award winning program for children (ages 12 to 36 months) and their parents or caregivers that combines music, movement, visual literacy and language development to help children develop emotionally and socially while encouraging a positive attitude towards learning.

PRESCHOOL STORY TIME – Wednesdays at 11 am-12 pm Children ages 3 to 5 years and their parents or caregivers are invited to join us for stories, rhymes, song and finger-plays to help develop early literacy skills and encourage group participation.

November 1, 2016 – Monthly Computer Class: Computer Purchase Tips and Guidance at 9 am-10 am Do you need a new computer but don’t know which brand to get? Do you want something simple but the salesman keeps showing you the most expensive models? In this class we will learn what a CPU does, how many gigs you need and how much they will cost. A library card and PIN are required. Register in person at the information desk or by phone at 916-375-6465. Space is limited to 20 people.

November 1, 2016 through November 12, 2016 – Special Program:  Elf on the Shelf Our sneaky Elf had so much fun hiding in the library last year that he is visiting us early this year! Look for Elfred every day from November 1st thru November 12th. If you find him, tell the librarian where he’s hiding and you’ll be entered into a drawing for your very own Elf on the Shelf! Great for children 3-12 years old. Winners will be announced November 14th.

November 4, 2016 – I SEE YOU at 1 pm-4 pm I SEE YOU is a YoloArts project funded by a grant from the James Irvine Foundation’s Exploring Engagement Fund. The project seeks to increase community engagement through the arts among people experiencing homelessness in Yolo County, while raising awareness for participants throughout the region by saying I SEE YOU.

November 8, 2016 – ELECTION DAY

November 9, 2016 – Brown Bag Series by AARP: Prepare to Care at 12:30 pm-2 pm Join us for our AARP Brown Bag Series.  A new series by AARP at the library with monthly topic discussion on living healthy as an older adult. This month’s topic is on Prepare to Care. Join us and together we will build a care giving framework to help you prepare to care for family members, neighbors and friends. You are welcome to bring a brown bag lunch.  No registration required.

November 9, 2016 – PINTEREST Holiday Gift at 4 pm-5 pm Teens are invited to attend this free workshop. Come and join us in the Teen Room and create your very own terrarium, canvas art, and duct tape pencil holder. Great for holiday gifts!

November 9, 2016 – USCIS: Citizenship: Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) at 6 p.m.-7 p.m. Come out and learn all about Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). A representative from the office of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services—District 22 will be here to answer all questions.

November 10, 2016 – All Things String at 6 p.m.-8 p.m. Whether you knit, crochet, embroider, or enjoy other fiber arts, this social crafting circle is for you! Bring your current project or start something new!

November 11, 2016 – Veterans Day – Library Closed

November 16, 2016 – What’s Happening Seniors? at 12 p.m.-1:30 p.m. Want to get together with interested, active seniors to make new friends, share stories, learn from one another, and find out What’s Happening in West Sacramento and beyond?

November 19, 2016 – Therapeutic Tai Chi and Qigong Part XIII at 4 pm-5 pm
Come and learn a series of movements and breathing exercises for general wellness, stress relief, physical balance, flexibility and fall prevention. Part XIII, we shall adapt some of the Tai Chi movements we learned from previous classes. Cardio Tai Chi—modern cardiovascular fitness methods are incorporated to exercise our heart and lung. Rhythmic music will be played. Workout will have light-to-moderate intensity.

Dr. Gigi Tze-yue Hu is a semi-retired Asian Studies scholar and is currently completing her Master Degree in Tai Chi.

November 21, 2016 through November 23, 2016 – Self-Direct Activity: Thanksgiving Holiday Crafts Everyone is invited to come and create their very own Thanksgiving Holiday Craft. Materials will be provided by the library.

November 24 & 25, 2016 – Happy Thanksgiving – Library Closed

November 28, 2016 – Tales for Tails at 4 pm-5 pm
Children ages 6 through 12 are invited to join us for a fun “Read to a Dog” program. Kid ages 6 through 12 are welcome to attend! You will get to meet up to 4 (FOUR!) very special dogs and their handlers. Animals are ideal reading companions because they: 1. Listen attentively; 2. Do not judge, laugh or criticize; 3. Allow children to proceed at their own pace; and 4. Are less intimidating than peers. Parents or caregivers are asked to stay with their child and help with the reading. This helps builds confidence in reading out loud. After 10 visits, a participant can pick 1 free book.

November 30, 2016 – WSFOL Monthly Meeting at 6:30 pm-8 pm
The WSFOL meets the last Wednesday of the month.  WSFOL is a non-profit 501 (c) 3 organization dedicated to serving the West Sacramento community supporting library programs and services.  WSFOL is always recruiting for new friends.
