West Sacramento City Manager Announces Appointment of New Police Chief

Bridge LogoTom McDonald, a highly regarded Los Angeles Police Department Captain, has been appointed as the City of West Sacramento’s next Police Chief.

McDonald currently serves as the commanding officer for LAPD’s Bomb Squad, Bomb K-9, and Hazmat. He has also served as the patrol commanding officer in Rampart and in south central Los Angeles.  McDonald will replace West Sacramento’s current chief, Dan Drummond, who recently announced his retirement after serving the city for nine years.

“We are very pleased to add someone with Mr. McDonald’s leadership and background to our city’s police department and management team”, said West Sacramento City Manager Martin Tuttle.  “His personality and expertise are a perfect match for the department and the community.”

Among his varied assignments during his 30-year career, McDonald served as a gang officer, SWAT element member, and training officer. McDonald distinguished himself as an expert in crowd management during the 2000 Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles.  Following the September 11 World Trade Center attack in New York City, McDonald developed an award winning counter-terrorism program known as Operation  Archangel designed to assess and protect the criticality and vulnerability of key facilities in Los Angeles.

“I am looking forward to building on Chief Drummond’s efforts and contributing to, and being part of, West Sacramento’s emergence as a great city,” said McDonald. McDonald, who joined LAPD as a police officer in 1983, received his Bachelor’s degree in Organization Management from Biola University.  He will begin work in early July.
