Cooling Centers in West Sacramento, Week of July 1

During the current heat wave, two West Sacramento centers will provide relief:

The West Sacramento Recreation Center, 2801 Jefferson Blvd., will be open this week from 8 am to 9:30 pm (except July 4th when it closes at 5:30 pm). Water coolers are accessible. Not only is the Rec Center air conditioned inside, the Rec Center pools can also help keep you cool–Rec Swim is from 1-5 pm both Saturday and Sunday. A day pass is $6 for adults, and $4.50 for seniors and students. Contact the Rec Center at (916) 617-4770.

The Arthur F. Turner Community Library, 1212 Merkley Ave., will be open as a place to escape the hot temperatures this week. The Turner Library schedule is Monday, 12 pm-8 pm; Tuesday and Wednesday, 11 am-8 pm; closed Thursday, July 4; Friday and Saturday, 10 am-5:30 pm; and Sunday, 1 pm-5 pm. To contact the Turner Library, call (916) 375- 6465.

The cooling centers are air-conditioned. Comfortable seating is available. Stay hydrated! Water is available at both cooling center sites, but bringing a re-useable water bottle is recommended. Dress in layers so you can shed layers when in the shade and add to cover skin when in direct sunlight.

If you go boating on the river, please remember to provide life preservers for the safety of your passengers. If you’re playing in the river, remember to equip your young people with life preservers. If you need to borrow a life preserver, please check the supply at Fire Station 45, 2040 Lake Washington Blvd., Saturday and Sunday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Be safe!
