Sacramento Regional County Sanitation District Rate Increase

The Sacramento Regional County Sanitation District (Regional San), which treats all of City of West Sacramento’s wastewater, has received a new wastewater discharge permit issued by the State of California. The new permit is very stringent and requires them to remove ammonia and install new filtration processes at the treatment plant.

This result is a massive project, named the Echo Water Project, which will cost between $1.5 and $2.1 billion dollars to construct and which must be completed over the next 7 to 9 years. To pay for the improvements, Regional San must raise customer monthly rates for wastewater treatment.Regional San is currently proposing a three-year plan to increase rates by $3.00 dollars per month each year over the next three years. Regional San’s current monthly rate is $26 and is proposed to increase to $35 by 2016.

There will be a public hearing on the proposed rate structure on Wednesday, March 12, 2014 at 9:30 am at the Sacramento County Administration Building at 700 H Street in Sacramento. Final adoption of the ordinance will be on March 26, 2014.
