Women Making a Positive Impact on Sacramento Area Youth

The Ladies of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. value public service, sisterhood and scholarship. The local chapter, the Eta Alpha Sigma Alumnae Chapter, is working with community partners to sponsor the 17th Annual Youth Symposium– “Partners for Progress, Working Together to Build Bridges for Youth” which will be held at River City High School on March 8.

The free event will offer opportunities for youth, ages 13-17, to explore future careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Participants will take part in workshops which include fun science experiments, Zumba, and smart banking. Community partners include teachers from River City High School and Elkhorn Village K-8 School, Wells Fargo Bank, and West Sac Studio Vibe.

The chapter has a club for girls called the Rhoer Club. Rhoer Clubs offer girls a positive experience designed to train them to be leaders and teach them the value of self-respect and responsibility. In addition to participating in fun activities throughout the year, the young ladies plan and participate in community service activities, plan cultural excursions, visit colleges and attend regional and national conferences.

Also the chapter has a scholarship program. Each year the chapter provides a scholarship to recognize and support outstanding high school seniors pursuing college studies. This program provides scholarships to assist with first-year College expenses. The deadline for application is March 15.

The chapter president and local teacher, Belinda Rabb-Patterson, is very excited about her role in helping our youth. “Being able to make a difference in the lives of our youth is a privilege and honor. It’s great working alongside with women who share my enthusiasm for serving the community.”
