Employee Recognition Program

On April 16, 2014, the City of West Sacramento held its annual Employee Recognition Ceremony.  The Port Business Plan Team was selected as the 2014 Team of the Year.  The Redevelopment Dissolution Team was acknowledged with an Exceptional Team Award.

Recognized as this year’s Employee of the Year was Bryan Jonson, Senior Fire Inspector.  He was selected from a field of ten employees representing various departments in the City of West Sacramento.  Employees were nominated by their department heads for Customer Service; Work Ethic; Contribution and Ambassadorship.  Category winners were: Katie Rodgers, Customer Service; Janet Chapan and Stephen Gunn, for Work Ethic; Elaine Carlton, Contribution; and Kaisa Miller, Ambassador.  Recognized as Premier Employees were Andrea Donahue, Yazminda Gray, Michelle Kimura, and Celinda Nesbit.


City Council Honors City Employee of the Year – At the annual Employee Recognition Ceremony, April 16, Mayor Christopher Cabaldon announced the selection of Senior Fire Inspector Bryan Jonson as the 2014 Employee of the Year. Mr. Jonson’s honor reflects his work with the Community Emergency Response Team, inspections, hazardous materials response, fireworks event permits, and weed abatement. Mr. Jonson is pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Administration. During the program, the City Council also recognized the Port Business Plan Team as the year’s Team of the Year and the Redevelopment Dissolution Team as the year’s Exceptional Team. Mr. Jonson was honored for his work which encompasses a wide range of responsibilities including the CERT program, weed abatement, permits, inspections, hazardous materials response, and fireworks event permits and staffing, to name a few.  He responds to a number of various events and emergencies and has assisted with the Fraud Fair, and Camp Smokey at the State Fair.  Mr. Jonson is pursuing his Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Administration and volunteers with the Clarksburg Fire Department.

An Exceptional Team Award was presented to the Redevelopment Dissolution Team.  Team members were Paul Blumberg, Public Finance Manager; Aaron Laurel, Economic Development Manager; Jon Robinson, Housing & Community Investment Manager; Nitish Sharma, Budget Manager; and Katie Yancey, Senior Analyst.  This team was formed to provide multi-disciplinary guidance to the City’s efforts to comply with the State’s dissolution of redevelopment.  The City of West Sacramento Redevelopment Successor Agency was the first city to receive a safe and sound audit report out of the over 400 redevelopment agencies state-wide.  The Redevelopment Dissolution Team’s work made the City a model for other jurisdictions in terms of complying with complicated State requirements for winding down redevelopment.

The 2014 Team of the Year, the Port Business Plan Team, was selected from twelve teams nominated by various departments.  The team members were Paul Blumberg, Public Finance Manager; Aaron Laurel, Economic Development Manager; Mike Luken, Transportation Program Manager; Josette Reina, Public Works Administrative Manager; Jon Robinson, Housing & Community Investment Manager; Nitish Sharma, Budget Manager; Rick Toft, Port Business Manager; and Phil Wright, Director of Administrative Services.  This team was charged with completing a business plan to assess the Port’s financial situation.  The business plan was adopted by the Port Commission in March 2013.  Over the past year, the team’s work resulted in cost reductions and debit retirement, a North Terminal Master Lease, new lease revenue, Port/Lake Washington improvements and various clean-up projects.  The business plan has positioned the Port to be financially self-sufficient going forward.

Other teams nominated were the Accela Automation Team; Active and Secure Initiative Team; 2013 Bicycle/Pedestrian/Trails Master Plan Team; Bridge District Water Storage Facility and Jerome D. Barry Park Project Team; Homeless/Transient Public Safety Action-Tower Bridge Gateway Clean-Up Team; I Street Bridge Repair Team; Learning Ladder Preschool and Child Care Center Team; Police Report Writing Committee; Streetlight Retrofit Project Team; and West Capitol Emergency Water Main Repair Team.
